Tobacco Free Policy Owen Sound U13 and U17 Girls Soccer Teams – July 2010

...The Owen Sound U13 and U17 Girls Soccer teams recognized that there is ample research demonstrating the health hazards caused by the use of tobacco products, including smoking, smokeless tobacco and breathing second-hand smoke, and understand our responsibility to the participants of our program to model and promote tobacco-free lifestyles. It is the goal of the Owen Sound U13 and U17 Girls Soccer Teams to promote a healthy tobacco free soccer community and to assist in the prevention of youth starting tobacco use.

  • Preventing youth from starting to use tobacco industry products.
  • Protecting the environment
  • Protecting children from second hand smoke.
  • Creating tobacco free culture.
  • Helping smokers quit.
  • The City of Owen Sound has just implemented the policy that no person shall “smoke” within 9 meters of any public playing field.
  • The U13 and U17 Girls teams will add to this policy to request that no person (players/participants, coaches/leaders, parents, spectators and officials) shall smoke within view of the playing field during practices and/or game situations.
  • We also will request that when visiting other fields at out of town games, coaches, players, parents and spectators follow the same policy.
  • This includes carrying a lighted cigar, cigarette, and pipe or any other lighted smoking equipment, smoke, snuff, dip or chew tobacco.
  • Policy Promotion
  • The policy will be included in the first soccer schedules and notices so all new and returning participants, their parents/guardians, coaches, convenors and officials know about the policy from the start.
  • The policies and signage will also be promoted through email to all visiting soccer teams as well as all local teams.
  •  We will make the policy visible throughout the season using various messages, including signage with logos and we will encourage coaches and older players to promote active, healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles among players. Signage will be posted at the Kiwanis Soccer Complex in the following locations: bulletin board, change rooms and washrooms.
  • Reinforcement
  • Encouraging all coaches/volunteers/players/parents and spectators to respectfully remind someone using tobacco about the tobacco free policy as displayed on signage at the Kiwanis Soccer Complex.
  • We will consistently apply consequences with people who repeatedly break the policy with a verbal and written warning from the coach in the case of a repeat violation.  Following a written warning the individual violating the policy may be asked to leave the practice or game.
